Sourwood Festival (additional info)
In 1976, the sourwood tree was designated as the official tree of Black Mountain. Each year, an arts and crafts festival is held in August aptly called the Sourwood Festival. The festival draws over 30,000 people from all over the United States. The festival boasts of music, dancing, arts and crafts, great food, kid’s rides, games, and good southern hospitality. With over 200 vendors, there is something to please everyone.

Every May and October for twenty years, over a thousand people congregate at picturesque Rockmont and Lake Eden for the LEAF Festival. This tour is an opportunity for residents and visitors to experience local cuisine while exploring architectural and historical aspects of Black Mountain. The tour offers food, beverage, and dessert tastings at five or more eateries. Featured on UNC-TV Public Television, this is a “secret gem” that has been discovered by many, so reserve your spot early.

On Eastside Drive is an organic microbrewery and taproom with house-made beers and an outdoor stage. Tours are offered on Saturdays. Events include performances by Simo, Hustle Souls, and Fireside Collective and Stout Hog Day (a brewers’ breakfast that celebrates the “Dark Art of beer.”) Some of their unique brews include Belgian Witbier (a light summer beer), Chocalatized (contains raw cocoa and is the darkest of the Pisgah brews), and Russian Imperial that received a gold metal at the Great American Beer Festival.
Attractions and activities in the environs of Black Mountain are the Blue Ridge Parkway, Chimney Rock State Park, and Mount Mitchell State Park.
The Blue Ridge Parkway (additional info)
The Blue Ridge Parkway began as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program to create jobs during the Great Depression in the 1930’s. The parkway begins in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and ends at the Great Smokey Mountains national Park in western North Carolina. It boasts of 252 miles of leisure driving with beautiful mountain, flora and fauna, look-out spaces, picnic areas, campsites, hiking trails, majestic lakes and waterfalls. Some areas are day trips from Black Mountain. Going north on the Parkway are Craggy Gardens, the Folk Art Center with three fine arts galleries and daily craft demonstrations, access to the hiking and biking Mountain to Sea Trail, and the Museum of North Carolina Minerals. Of the twenty-five tunnels on the Parkway, twenty-four are in the Asheville- Black Mountain area. Going south on the Parkway from Black Mountain is the Mount Pisgah Campground with campsites, showers, picnic areas, and hiking trails. Next is Looking Glass Rock that reflects like a mirror when sunlight hits it and when it is wet with rain or ice. Nearby is Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock, a natural kid-friendly water slide. The Graveyard Fields Overlook has short hiking trails, a swimming hole, and a great view.

One thousand acres of scenic attractions twenty-five miles south of Black Mountain is Chimney Rock State Park. Standing on Chimney Rock itself and gazing at the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains with Lake Lure close by is a breathtaking experience. Located in Rutherford County, the Chimney Rock is a 315 feet, 535 million year old monolith. Also in the park is Hickory Nut Falls, Four Seasons and Skyline Trails, supervised rock climbing, and the Great Wonderland Adventure for kids.
Mt. Mitchell State Park (additional info)
Mt. Mitchell State Park encompasses 1,996 acres and can be seen from the Black Mountain area. The highest peak on Mt. Mitchell is 6,999 feet, making it the highest peak east of the Mississippi. It was named for Elisha Mitchell, professor who noted its height, whose grave is located at the base of the observation platform. An exhibit hall at the summit tells about the mountain’s natural, cultural, and historical heritage. Several camping sites and hiking trails are available. Two major events at Mt. Mitchell are the Assault on Mt. Mitchell, a 102 mile biking endurance contest, and the Mt. Mitchell Challenge, a harsh weather, winter endurance ultra marathon that begins in Black Mountain.
Hiking in the Black Mountain Region
The Swannanoa Valley Museum in Black Mountain sponsors two main hiking series: the Explorer Series and the Rim Explorer Series. The Explorer Series consists of seven hikes that explore the past of communities that shape the Swannanoa Valley. These seven hikes are approximately three miles and are scheduled form March through October. The Rim Explorer Series are for experienced hikers and are all day excursions. Hikers explore remote and little traveled territory. They learn the history, geography, hydrology, and environment of the Swannanoa Valley. They are scheduled from February – December. In addition to these hikes, other hikes and driving tours are available for all abilities.

In addition, BMP is a Title I “Reward School” three years in a row and has special programs such as Leader in Me, the Maker Club, and Girls on the Run.

Owen Middle School, home if the War Colts, was named for Charles Dexter Owen, founder of Beacon Blankets in Swannanoa. Hoof prints of the “War Horse” (home if the War Lords and War Lassies) welcome folks to Owen High School. OHS boasts a 90% graduation rate for 2014-2015. In addition to standard NC high school academic fare, the school offers Virtual high school courses and Distance Learning. Spanish, French, and Chinese are the world languages taught and a menagerie of clubs provide extra activites. One effective program at Owen is the “Smart Lunch”. During the lunch hour, student use their time for tutoring, clubs, and make-up.
